The Origin of Bazooka
The idea for Bazooka was born in late 2008 from the severe post-partum depression I experienced with my youngest child. It was so bad, and I was in such a dark, self-hating place - I had decided to end my life.
Then I thought, well, if I *literally* have nothing left to lose - I'm goin' out SCREAMIN'.
And so I did what I had always wanted to do - publish my own magazine that talked about sex, love and spoke truth to power in a little Southern Baptist town in Western Kentucky.
I handed out my first copy at my son's 5th birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese to the girl behind the prize counter, a baby Bella on my hip.
It grew. Fast. People were thrilled to find they weren't alone. That there was more to this small town than churches and banks.
I had to stop for a while because I was a single mom to two young children, and I had some life changes to make.
So I focused on my kids, stopped dating, went back to school in my late 30s, and graduated with a B.S. in Journalism at age 40. My mother said, "Took ya long enough." 😂
Even though I was not printing at this time, I still had about five or six thousand followers - which is a lot for a town of 25k lol. I kept people informed of events, shared fundraisers, and often helped people in the community during dangerous times. And everyone still called me Bella lol.
I did start printing again in 2024 - but I had to stop because with my health issues and my young daughter's health issues - I knew I 1) needed more flexibility, 2) had to diversify the income, and 3) build a structure that could let me write, grow my audience, and actually get paid for my hard work for once. When you spend 30+ years writing and have printed 46 issues of an independent magazine - you should not still be worrying if the power is gonna get turned off.
So - the weekend of May 8th and 9th of 2026 - I will be launching my Substack - @bellabazooka (new content every Thurs!) and this website at a huge festival called the Lower Town Arts and Music Festival '26. It's gonna be a TON OF FUN and SO MAGICAL!
I will also be printing special collector's editions when time allows. I'm a Xennial - we like our analog. Something about the smell of fresh newsprint...sigh.
There will also be merch available on this site, and I'm even thinking of making an app. But - look at me - trying to build empires at 1am. I need to go to bed! Kittyface keeps trying to drag me there anyway.
Check out my link tree on the links page and you will discover all the good writing (Substack), how to help Fuel the Chaos (free press runs on magic and vibes - but a girl gotta eat.) And even some fun stuff, such as the Spotify Bazooka Army Playlist.
If you want to learn more - check out the magazines or head to my Substack. Because while it is important to remember your past - if you keep looking back, you WILL trip. So - Bazooka Army - onward and upward!
